Our comprehensive and exciting Introduction to the Metal Lathe Class offers a unique learning experience that offers hands on training in many of the basic skills of metal lathe operation and provides the opportunity to machine a cool project in brass or aluminum. This class is intended to cover lathe safety, basic metal lathe operations, and allows you to quickly create chips by making a completed project. Your pen project is designed to have you learn the following metal lathe operations:
- Facing the part
- Turning the outer diameter of the part to reduce the diameter and make the part concentric
- Center drilling to properly start a hole and to support longer parts with the use of live or dead center
- Drilling and reaming a hole to a specific diameter
- Gnurling the surface to provide texture and grip
- Parting off the finished component from the original material stock
During this four hour course you will also learn about the appropriate tools and setup for each operation, how to install stock in the lathe chuck and how to establish basic concentricity. This workshop will give you an excellent foundation to confidently operate a mini metal lathe in completing your own projects at home or taking more advanced classes in the future.
