Our highly sought after RAKU course is back!
What is RAKU? A type of low-firing process that was inspired by traditional Japanese raku firing. Western-style raku usually involves removing pottery from the kiln while it's still glowing hot and placing it into containers with combustible materials. Once the materials ignite, the containers are closed. This produces an intense reduction atmosphere which affects the colors in glazes and clay bodies. The drastic thermal shock also produces crackling of certain glazes. Because of the varying direction of the flames and materials, no two pieces will ever look alike.
Go from being a complete beginner to making and firing beautiful RAKU Clay pottery in 3 weeks!
In this 3 Saturday course students will learn the fundamentals of working with clay, glazing and Raku firing. Each student will hand-build multiple pieces of pottery with RAKU clay during the initial session on Saturday, November 6, 1 PM - 6 PM .It's the longest day of the course. Feel free to bring lunch and/or snacks with you. We'll have the opportunity to take breaks. You can stay for the entire time or if you find its too much then..just as long as you feel like. You may build as many pieces as your time allows.
Your new creations will be left to dry then bisque fired and will be ready to be glazed a week later, Saturday November 13, 1 PM - 5 PM Students will learn proper glazing technique and will be able to experiment with a variety of glazes.
The spectacular firing will take place on Saturday, November 20, 1 PM - 5 PM (Depending on the number of students and ceramics pieces, multiple firings may take place throughout the day, exact time may be scheduled with each student during the course.) Students will be able to take home their creations the same day! Each firing takes about 30 minutes with some preparation for the next firing and some possible downtime in the air-conditioned classroom while the kilns come up to temperature.
