Service Description
Our comprehensive and exciting Introduction to the Metal Lathe Class offers a unique learning experience that offers hands on training in many of the basic skills of metal lathe operation and provides the opportunity to machine a cool project in brass or aluminum. This class is intended to cover lathe safety, basic metal lathe operations, and allows you to quickly create chips by making a completed project. Your pen project is designed to have you learn the following metal lathe operations: - Facing the part - Turning the outer diameter of the part to reduce the diameter and make the part concentric - Center drilling to properly start a hole and to support longer parts with the use of live or dead center - Drilling and reaming a hole to a specific diameter - Gnurling the surface to provide texture and grip - Parting off the finished component from the original material stock During this five hour course you will also learn about the appropriate tools and setup for each operation, how to install stock in the lathe chuck and how to establish basic concentricity. This workshop will give you an excellent foundation to confidently operate a mini metal lathe in completing your own projects at home or taking more advanced classes in the future. Please wear a short sleeve shirt or tight fitting long sleeves. NO LOOSE CLOTHING OR JEWELRY!! Denim jeans or cotton pants are recommended as well as solid close toed shoes. Please review the published prerequisites before enrolling in intermediate and advanced offerings. Registration & Cancellations - All registrations are non-refundable. - Cancel ≥7 days in advance: receive full credit for a future program. - Cancel <7 days: receive 50% credit for a future program. - One-time rescheduling allowed if requested at least 72 hours before the start of your scheduled class - Further reschedules or cancellations = no credit. - If booking includes multiple students, you must share info for each one. Late cancellations impact us financially; please notify us promptly. Please contact us by phone or email to request changes. Missed Classes No refunds or make-ups for missed classes unrelated to Guild or faculty issues. No Prorating Tuition is not adjusted for late starts or missed days. Program Changes & Cancellations - We reserve the right to substitute instructors, adjust, or cancel programs - Weather-related cancellations will be rescheduled based on availability. - If the Guild cancels a class, a full refund will be issued. - We notify participants of cancellations at least 48 hours in advance when the minimum participation isn’t met. Safety & Liability The Guild, Urban Craft and Folk Art School, and Dark Angel Armory & Forge are not liable for injuries. By registering, you acknowledge and accept responsibility for the associated risk with the class content. Participants may be photographed for promotional use. Contact the Director before your program starts to d privacy requests. Waivers All students (or guardians) must sign a waiver upon arrival, which includes: - Liability Release - Photo/Video Consent (The form is also available online.) Youth Programs Guidelines No supervision before 9:30 AM. No curbside drop-off/pick-up. An adult must sign in/out. Parents are required to attend a 15-minute safety briefing on the first day. Morning sessions end at 1:00 PM, and afternoon sessions end at 4:30 PM. Supervised lunch breaks are provided for both AM and PM enrollments. Bring your lunch and snacks. Fridge & microwave available. A sign-in/out sheet is provided daily. Please include your best contact number. For alternate pickups, please notify us in writing and list the information on the sign-in sheet.
